About Air Conditioning

Air Conditioning in cars is now almost standard in new vehicles as we have grown to enjoy luxury and the ability to control the climate. Modern air conditioning is now considered reliable compared to the first examples when it was first introduced in the 1940s. Today AC are computerised climate control systems with variable air flow which is also ducted to the rear seats.
The major parts of the car air conditioning system consist of:

  • Indoor Evaporator - located in the front dashboard area
  • Outdoor Condenser - located in the front of the car radiator
  • Compressor - located in the engine bay powered by the engine
  • Connecting tubes of flexible piping
  • Thermal expansion device - engine bay
  • Sight glass / accumulator - engine bay
  • Filter drier - to catch particles and moisture in the system
  • Computer / electrical controls for climate control

Why Air Con fails

In the past car AC was susceptible to refrigerant gas loss during winter due to the compressor seal losing its lubrication oil seal due to inactivity. This refrigerant gas (R12) was harmful to the environment and has since been superseded with a less harmful gas (R314A).


Repairing AC

Repairing AC in older vehicles that still have the harmful gas can be be retro fitted with new parts and the new refrigerant.
